I create mixed media works that use symbols to explore myths from various cultures and express my view of the modern world.
Throughout history many cultures have developed images that reflect symbolic significance. These symbols serve to teach their beliefs and to pass on evidence of their unique experience. This concept of creating a visual vocabulary to communicate ideas is how I came to use symbolic imagery in my own artwork.
I am very interested in the research of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, particularly the concept of archetypal imagery. Both of these theorists suggest there may be a “collective unconscious” that has been developed over thousands of years. We retain and transmit a common vocabulary of symbolic forms. These forms have been developed in the human mind to help the unconscious exert influence over the conscious. These forms almost always find their place within cultural myths.
My work in its various mediums is typically made up of structured patterns combined with archetypal images. The patterns and symbols represent the way the conscious and subconscious mind work together to create a tangible meaning out of intangible ideas. Along with being an artist, I also work as an art educator. I am state certified and have been teaching in Tampa, Florida for six years. I believe that creating art can increase one’s ability to understand and react to the world around them. I chose to become an artist to explore new ways to communicate my ideas and I also enjoy teaching this skill to my students. I am a Tampa native and grew up in Historic Ybor City. My great-grand parents migrated from Spain through Cuba, to the US. I have always felt ther was a disconnection between my Hispanic cultural heritage and my personal experiences growing up. Due to my grandparents wish to become “Americanized” during the 1950’s we didn't even speak Spanish at home. Through this transition, many stories and family traditions were lost. While searching for pieces of my own cultural identity I developed an interest in cultural myths and how they relate to modern society. |
